There are several different ways and reasons/motives to acquire the Portuguese Citizenship

Becoming a Portuguese national is a way for many people to reconnect with their ancestry and recover family traditions, pursuing their roots for sentimental reasons. On the other hand, some will find Portuguese Citizenship as the best way to facilitate business prospects that can lead to several business developments/enhancements.

In short, you can apply as namely as:
  • Descendants of Sephardic Jews;
  • Direct descendants/ascendents (first degree) of a Portuguese Citizen;
  • Grandchildren of a Portuguese Citizen;
  • Spouses (marriage or civil union);
  • Citizens of the former Portuguese Colonies (different regimes according to the former colony in question (please have in mind that there are also special rules for citizens of former Portuguese territories that can help them get Portuguese nationality).
IF YOU DON’T BELONG TO ANY OF THE CASES ABOVE, YOU MAY ALWAYS APPLY THROUGH THE REGULAR PORTUGUESE NATIONALITY PROGRAM.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Adoption by Portuguese Citizens
  • Minor or incapacitated, whose mother or father has acquired Portuguese nationality after his/her birth
  • Children of one or two Portuguese parents, born abroad, who register their birth in the Portuguese Civil registry, or declare that they want to be Portuguese
  • Individuals born abroad with at least one ascendant of Portuguese nationality up to the second degree in straight line, who has not lost that nationality
  • Have been legally resident in Portugal for at least 5 years
  • Minors, born in Portuguese territory, children of foreign citizens
  • Individuals who have had Portuguese nationality and who, having lost it, have never acquired another nationality
  • Children of foreigners who have usually stayed here in the 10 years immediately prior to the request
  • Born in Portugal and having no other Nationality
  • Children – born in Portugal – of foreign parents
